Build your strength and drop bodyweight fast with whey protein isolate.

Whey protein powder is the king of protein supplements thanks to its premium results formuscle growth and support, reducing damage to muscle and tissue and improving endurance levels.

Protein powder is easy to add to your daily workout routine and fit into your diet. The most popular method is mixing it with water or your choice of milk to create a protein shake. You can also add protein powder to your morning smoothies — depending on your flavour of choice, protein powder can make your smoothies even tastier!

We recommend taking 25 to 50 grams of whey protein isolate (WPI) per day, especially after working out. Serving suggestions differ between products, so be sure to check the label beforehand. If you’re looking for a specific type of protein powder for your workout, get in touch with one of our friendly team members in-store oronline and we’ll match you with the best product for your needs.

What are the benefits of taking whey protein isolate?

On average, our daily protein intake should be around 0.8 grams per kilogram of our body weight. For most people, that adds up to about 50 - 70 grams per day, which you can usually get from consuming eggs, nuts, fish, dairy products, poultry and legumes. However, athletic adults need twice as much protein per day to avoid feeling sluggish or fatigued after exercising.

This means if you’re looking to bulk up, you’ll need a protein supplement to keep building muscle mass.

Whey protein isolate has other health benefits aside from building muscle. It contains all nine essential amino acids that our bodies can’t naturally produce. Whey protein can help you lose body fat while preserving lean muscle. It can also help boost your immune system and increase your endurance levels.

How is whey protein isolate different from other whey protein?

Whey is a protein-rich liquid derived from milk during the creation of cheese or yogurt. This liquid is pasteurised and dehydrated to create whey powder.

There are several different categories of whey protein powders and supplements on the market, with the three main types beingwhey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and whey protein hydrolysate.

  • Whey protein concentrate— The most common whey protein, whey protein concentrate also contains the highest levels of lactose. It requires less processing time than other forms of whey protein, making it the go-to choice for most protein products like protein shakes, bars, and more.

  • Whey protein isolate (WPI) Isolated whey protein contains low amounts of lactose, making it ideal for lactose intolerant people or anyone who has trouble digesting dairy. WPI takes longer to produce but contains more protein and fewer carbohydrates per serving. This also makes whey protein isolate products more expensive.

  • Whey protein hydrolysate – This form of whey protein is known for being easier to digest, and is often used in infant-friendly formulas.

Which form of whey protein is best for you will depend on your diet, budget, and tolerance for lactose.

Hit your goals with our tips for taking whey protein isolate.

There are many ways to take your daily dose of whey protein isolate, including protein shakes, smoothies or even mixing it through your porridge and cereal. You can optimise your workout journey by taking whey protein at specific times and with certain other foods, depending on your specific goals.

Check out our tips for the best foods to mix with your whey protein isolate.

  • Building muscle – We recommend taking whey protein with high-carb foods like bananas or oats, which will help replenish your muscles’ glycogen stores. If you eat dairy, mix your whey protein with milk or skim milk to add extra support for your muscle growth.

  • Losing weight — For weight loss, mix your whey protein isolate with low-calorie liquids such as water, non-dairy milk or coconut water. We suggest unsweetened non-dairy milk and coconut water to reduce the level of sugar per serving.
It’s also important to supplement your appetite with fibre when trying to lose weight. Add chia seeds, flax seeds, or dark greens like spinach or kale to your protein smoothies to get a boost of fibre in your diet.

  • Low-carb diets — Low-carb or keto diets require foods with healthy, unsaturated fats like avocado or peanut butter, which can easily be added to a protein smoothie.

  • Improving your gut health — Whey protein is an effective supplement for improving gut health and supporting good gut bacteria. Try taking fibres like kale and spinach or probiotic foods like yoghurt with your protein powder to boost your gut health.

FAQs about whey protein isolate

Is whey protein isolate dairy-free?

No.

While whey protein isolate is good for people who suffer from lactose intolerance, it isn’t completely free from dairy. Dairy free and lactose-free are two different things — lactose-free products still have dairy in them as they are made with dairy. Dairy-free products contain no lactose and no dairy.

Whey protein isolate is not entirely free from lactose, either. It contains a small amount of lactose that is easily digestible by most lactose-intolerant people. If you’re lactose intolerant and are concerned about taking whey protein isolate, speak to one of our friendly team members for more information and personalised recommendations.

We also offer a range ofdairy-free whey protein supplements suitable for anyone following a dairy-free or vegan diet.

Should I take whey protein isolate or whey protein concentrate?

Both whey protein isolate and concentrate are great options for building muscle, reducing fat and improving overall stamina.

The main difference between isolate and concentrate is the amount of lactose they each contain. Whey concentrate contains higher amounts of lactose, meaning whey protein isolate is the better choice for anyone who is lactose intolerant or who struggles to digest dairy products. Isolate also contains less fat and carbohydrates per serving, making it ideal for low-fat, low-carb diets.

The other difference between the two is cost. On average, whey protein isolate is more expensive per kilogram than concentrate. If you aren’t lactose intolerant or on a low-fat/low-carb diet, whey protein concentrate is more affordable and equally effective than whey protein isolate.
